Our latest product – the RacingLine Rear Disc/Rotor Upgrade replaces the original rear ventilated discs with beautifully engineered motorsport-inspired 2 piece ventilated, grooved discs and aluminium bells (or top hats).
As we have retained the dimensions of the original rears (at 310mm x 22mm) this is a simple, direct replacement disc with no other changes needed to rear calipers, pads or mounting hardware.
Not only do the replacement rear discs deliver a better resistance to warping under high heat applications, they also give a small reduction in unsprung mass.
This is the ideal compliment to our Big Brake Upgrade, or any other front brake upgrade, and also significantly improve the aesthetics of the car!
As anyone who has used the standard rear discs in a motorsport or serious track application knows, the original single-piece steel discs can exhibit some issues with “coning” due to the differences in the thermal expansion of the disc. This eventually manifests itself as a vibration under heavy braking.
We have developed the Rear Disc Upgrade to provide a motorsport-quality direct replacement part for our race cars to alleviate this problem, plus save unsprung weight over the originals.
In common with all top-end motorsport brake applications (including our Big Brake Upgrade Kit), we have selected a two-piece design for our rear discs.
Using an aluminium bell (or top hat) bolted to a separate steel disc, the unsprung weight is reduced by around 7%. The 2-piece construction reduces the likelihood of warping with heat, as the heat transfer is not as great as with the single-piece steel original parts.
The ventilated design effectively dissipates heat, while the grooved disc surfaces clear gases released from the pads when hot and help to keep that pad surface clean.
As a nice side-advantage to the performance and durability improvements, the Rear Disc Upgrade really does improve the aesthetics of the car. As the original standard rear disc centres tend to discolour and rust quite noticeably with age and use, this tends to be very visible on any car with open-spoke wheels.
We have ensured that the disc grooves and the design and anodized finish of the bell match exactly into the appearance of our Big Brake Kit front discs – thus giving a visually pleasing upgrade.
We have chosen to retain the standard factory rear brake calipers for this upgrade. After experimenting with replacement rear calipers in our race programme, we found that the benefits of changing these are negligible. Hence all of our race cars retain the standard rear calipers.
As we have retained the exact 310mm x 22mm dimensions of the original factory disc, no changes whatsoever are needed to the standard caliper, pads or mounting hardware. This has the benefit of reducing cost, retaining the reliability and fitting benefits of an OEM part, and ensuring a good range of pad choices exists.
For the MK7 Golf, this becomes even more important as the electronic parking brake mechanism is built in to the rear calipers.
Cars fitted with ventilated 310mm rear discs
The Rear Disc Upgrade is a direct replacement disc for the Golf 5/6/7 and other models such as Scirocco R and Audi S3 that use the larger 310mm ventilated disc as standard.
For all these models, this means that fitment is a direct disc replacement. No other changes are needed at all. We would always recommend that new pads are fitted at the same time as new discs.
Cars fitted with solid rear discs
The Rear Disc Upgrade is a chance for owners of cars with solid rear discs is to upgrade their smaller rear brake calipers with those from one of the cars above, and then to fit these rear discs. This upgrades your rear brakes to a much higher specification. This would apply to cars such as:
